Preparing And Painting The Exterior Of Your Home

The weather, the age of your home, and the quality of the original paint are all factors in how long you can go between painting your home's exterior. Anytime paint is used on the outside, those factors will come into play. There are some things to look for that indicate it is time to paint and so things you should consider when you begin the painting process. Remember that the exterior of your home is the first thing people see so making it look nice goes a long way to making a good first impression on people that come to your home.

It Is Time To Paint

There are telltale signs that it is time to paint the exterior of your home. Take a walk around the outside and look at the siding. If you see the paint chipping or peeling off the home, it is a pretty good indicator that the paint is ready to be replaced. The area around the eaves and down near the ground are both common areas for the paint to chip first. Once it does, it is a good chance that it will continue over more of the home's exterior. The paint is simply losing adhesion to the primer below it. Getting ready to paint will require a little preparation so head to your local home center and pick out a color for your home.

Preparing To Paint

Getting ready to paint the home is almost more time consuming then the painting but it is important that you take the right steps if you want the new paint to last. If you have exterior plant or flower beds around the home, they should be covered with plastic sheeting to protect them and any loose paint needs to be removed from the home. There are a couple ways you can do this. The first is with a hand scraper. Go over the house inch by inch, scraping the paint to remove the loose stuff and scuff up the paint. It sounds long and tedious because it is but if this is the only option you have, take the time to do it and your new paint will last much longer. The second method is to use a pressure washer on the home to blast the old paint away. Be careful with this method though. It is really easy to damage the wood siding if you stop in one place for too long. Keep the pressure washer moving for best results.

To Prime or Not To Prime

The question of primer is a good one. If you remove the flaky paint from your home and there is exposed or bare wood under it that is now showing, you need to apply some primer to it. You do not need to do the entire home but make sure you do any areas that no longer have paint on them. The painted areas can be scuffed with sandpaper to allow the new paint to better adhere to it so it if is not loose, it makes a suitable base for the new paint. Apply the new paint to the house once everything is ready and be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for how much to apply for the best possible results.
